Clean up your photos without losing memories
Step 1: Make sure you have a copy
Before a big clean-up, check where your pictures live. If you use iCloud Photos, Apple says deleting a photo on one device deletes it on your other devices too. Apple also says photos in iCloud Photos aren't duplicated in your iCloud backup, so keep backup copies of your library. That means iCloud Photos isn't the same as a second copy. If any pictures are irreplaceable, copy them somewhere else first.
Step 2: Start with the easy wins
These are the pictures most people never miss:
- Old screenshots, after a quick look for codes and account details.
- Burst photos, keeping the best shot or two.
- Duplicates, which your iPhone can merge for you.
- Pictures that chat apps saved for you. Here's how to stop more arriving.
Step 3: Go slowly with what matters
- Keep people, trips and pets for last. Don't try to judge thousands of those at once.
- Work in short sessions. Ten minutes a day beats one tiring evening, and you make fewer mistakes.
- Look before you delete. A group can hold a picture that doesn't belong in it.
- Don't empty Recently Deleted yet. Leave it for a few weeks. It's your safety net, and Apple says you can recover items there for 30 days. Here's how it works.
Step 4: Check the space
In Settings, tap General, then iPhone Storage to see what's left. If photos are still the biggest part, this guide explains why.
How FirstHour helps
Tidy up sorts your pictures into groups so you can clear them a little at a time, and shows what's left to sort. Keep all marks a whole group as done and changes nothing in Photos. Groups such as Receipts, Chats, Shopping and Old screenshots have a Delete all button, and iPhone asks once before anything goes. If iCloud Photos is on, deleted pictures go from your other devices too. People, Food and drinks, Pets and animals, Outdoors and Other photos don't have a Delete all button, so one tap can't clear your family pictures.
It isn't perfect. Sorting can put a picture in the wrong group, so look through a group before you delete it. It doesn't check videos or your Hidden album, and it doesn't make a backup of your pictures for you. Deleted pictures go to Recently Deleted for 30 days, and emptying it can't be undone.
Questions
How many photos should I keep?
There's no right number. Keep what you'd be sad to lose, and let go of copies and throwaways.
Should I pay for more iCloud storage instead?
That's your choice. More storage keeps clutter too, and clutter makes it harder to find the pictures you love.
